Sylvia Dochterman has over 25 years of professional management- and executive-level experience in the healthcare industry. She founded and heads the healthcare management consulting firm, The Dochterman Group, LLC, in which she has assisted physicians in establishing multiple new medical practices, improving practice operations, and has developed a specialty in helping medical groups build and optimize information technology infrastructure. Prior to establishing The Dochterman Group, LLC, Ms. Dochterman served for many years as President and CEO of Preferred Health Professionals (“PHP”), one of Kansas City's largest health plans. She was previously Director of Sales for CIGNA Healthcare, and held various positions within the DuPont Company's Biomedical Products division.
Ms. Dochterman also serves as Assistant Professor of Healthcare Management and Marketing at Rockhurst University's Helzberg School of Management in Kansas City, Missouri. She teaches graduate level Marketing Management, Leadership, Business Communication, and Health Systems courses in the MBA Healthcare Leadership Program. She also serves as Director of both the MBA in Health Care Leadership and the Executive MBA programs for the school. As Project Director for the MBA in Health Care Leadership for Physicians, she developed and launched an innovative, graduate level degree program designed specifically for the practicing physician market.
Ms. Dochterman earned her MBA in Corporate Finance and Marketing Management from the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at UCLA. Marly McMillen brings a variety of experience to her role working with the Dochterman Group. She was previously the executive director of the American Academy of Family Physician's (AAFP) National Demonstration Project (NDP) and also worked directly with medical practices as a practice facilitator. The initial focus of the NDP was to provide a "proof-of-concept" of the Patient-Centered Medical Home in 36 family medicine practices of varying sizes across the country. More »
Ms. McMillen previously served as project manager for the Future of Family Medicine project, a collaborative effort between seven family medicine organizations that culminated in numerous published reports in Annals of Family Medicine. The FFM project made several recommendations including a proposal for a new model of care for family medicine. Ms. McMillen also worked with FFM's Task Force Six which considered and developed financial modeling of FFM's proposed new model of care. Ms. McMillen subsequently worked with the team that created the business plan for the AAFP's practice transformation subsidiary which was originally developed as a national entity to help family medicine practices transform to the new model of care proposed in the FFM report.
Marly began her career in family medicine with the American Academy of Family Physicians and was the manager of the AAFP's Student Interest Initiative, which aimed to increase medical student interest in family medicine. She has also owned and operated her own consulting business where she provided consulting expertise to a variety of organizations including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, and the American College of Physicians.
Marly earned a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia and holds a bachelor's degree in management. Marly values opportunities for personal transformation and growth. Myles Gartland has over 15 years of professional experience in the healthcare industry. As a consultant with the Dochterman Group, he provides clients with expertise in areas of strategic business planning, marketing research and statistical analysis, forecasting, health information technology planning and implementation, operations management, and analysis of various healthcare business trends. Dr. Gartland is also Associate Professor of Economics at Rockhurst University's Helzberg School of Management. He spends his research and teaching time in the areas of competitive analysis, international business and strategy formulation, as well as issues related to globalization. He teaches in the MBA in Healthcare Leadership program, the Executive Fellows MBA program, as well as in the Helzberg School's undergraduate programs. He has over a dozen published articles and book chapters, as well as numerous international presentations.
Previously, Dr. Gartland was chief operating officer of Encompass Medical Group. He also served as director of operations for Human Health Care in Kansas City, Missouri, and at LifeData Medical Services.
Dr. Gartland received his PhD in Economics with an emphasis on the organizational economics of the healthcare industry and a Master's of Arts in Economics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Baker University.
